When ई (ii / long ee) attaches to a consonant, it uses the matra ी — written to the right of the consonant. It looks like a tall flag or pennant attached to the right side.
Examples on different consonants:
- क + ी = की ('kee')
- न + ी = नी ('nee')
- र + ी = री ('ree')
Words using ी:
- नदी ('nadi') — River
- मछली ('machhli') — Fish
- रोटी ('roti') — Flatbread
- नींद ('neend') — Sleep
- खीर ('kheer') — Rice pudding
