When ए (e, like 'a' in 'ape') attaches to a consonant, it uses the matra े — a hook written above the top bar (shirorekha) of the consonant.
Examples on different consonants:
- क + े = के ('ke')
- म + े = मे ('me')
- द + े = दे ('de')
Words using े:
- केला ('kela') — Banana
- मेला ('mela') — Fair / Gathering
- खेत ('khet') — Farm / Field
- देना ('dena') — To give
- पेड़ ('ped') — Tree
